FDA’s proposed guidance to industry on how to conduct product perception studies is a good start, but needs more specifics

My colleagues at the UCSF TCORS, in collaboration with Stanford, GSU and U of Iowa just submitted a public comment to FDA on its draft guidance on how tobacco companies should conduct perception studies of their products that are to be submitted to FDA as part of applications for approval to market these products orContinue reading “FDA’s proposed guidance to industry on how to conduct product perception studies is a good start, but needs more specifics”

COVID-19 incidence and death correlated with vaping across states

There is a robust literature showing that e-cigarette use damages lung function and compromises immune function in the respiratory system, which makes it reasonable to expect that e-cigarette use would be associated with more COVID-19 infections and deaths. So far, there has been one study (in youth and young adults) showing increased risk of developingContinue reading “COVID-19 incidence and death correlated with vaping across states”

SF Board of Supervisors send smokefree multiunit housing ordinance back to committee

After approving the ordinance 10-1 a week before, last Tuesday the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 7-4 to send the bill back to committee for further consideration. This is a big win for Big Tobacco because Norman Yee, the current Board President and primary author of the ordinance, will be termed out, as wellContinue reading “SF Board of Supervisors send smokefree multiunit housing ordinance back to committee”

Smokefree law and tobacco tax increases followed by big drops in heart attacks in Thailand

The fact that smokefree laws are followed by reductions in hospitalization for heart attacks has been well-documented (page 435) in developed countries such as the U.S. and European countries. Thailand began implementing smoking restrictions in 1992 and then repeatedly updated them to expand smokefree places. In 2010, Thailand achieved 100% smokefree public places at theContinue reading “Smokefree law and tobacco tax increases followed by big drops in heart attacks in Thailand”

SF Board of Supervisors passes tobacco smokefree multiunit housing bill but exempts marijuana

Tonight the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 10-1 to make multiunit housing tobacco smokefree but turned a blind eye to the evidence on the similar harms of secondhand marijuana smoke. The Board will have to vote a second time next week to send the ordinance to the mayor for signature. Marijuana advocates successfully arguedContinue reading “SF Board of Supervisors passes tobacco smokefree multiunit housing bill but exempts marijuana”

More evidence that e-cigs expanding nicotine addiction

Since the introduction of e-cigarettes to the U.S. market, use has increased rapidly among youth. Some have argued that, while not optimal, this increase represents kids who would otherwise have smoked cigarettes. In particular, Levy et al (Levy et al., 2017, Levy et al. 2018) concluded that the decline in U.S. youth cigarette smoking acceleratedContinue reading “More evidence that e-cigs expanding nicotine addiction”

Smoking marijuana associated with higher heart disease and stroke risk

One of the difficulties in studying the epidemiological link between marijuana use and disease is the fact that most people who smoke marijuana also smoke cigarettes, making it hard to pry the effects apart in a statistical analysis. Siddarth Shah and colleagues just published an important analysis that avoids this problem by only studying neverContinue reading “Smoking marijuana associated with higher heart disease and stroke risk”

How Thailand successful fought tobacco industry efforts to overturn its ENDS ban

Here in the USA and many other countries there are debates on the health effects of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products and whether they are, as the tobacco companies claim, reducing harm, some countries have decided to just prohibit their sale entirely. In doing so they have avoided skyrocketing youth use and can sit onContinue reading “How Thailand successful fought tobacco industry efforts to overturn its ENDS ban”

Juul delivers less of an important carcinogen than cigs

Kim Pulvers and colleagues recently published “Effect of Pod e-Cigarettes vs Cigarettes on Carcinogen Exposure Among African American and Latinx Smokers,” a well-done randomized controlled trial that demonstrated that African American and Latinx smokers who switched from cigarettes to Juul for 6 weeks had substantially lower levels of the lung carcinogen NNAL in their urine.Continue reading “Juul delivers less of an important carcinogen than cigs”

More evidence that e-cigs damage lung health independent of smoking

Wubn Xie and colleagues just published another well-done study showing that e-cigarette use (current and past) increases risk of lung disease by about 30%-70% even after taking any current or past smoking in to account. They used 4 years of the large Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study that follows people over time.Continue reading “More evidence that e-cigs damage lung health independent of smoking”
