Philip Morris’ modified risk tobacco product application for IQOS 3 does not adequately consider new research on IQOS’s appeal to adolescents or young adults, consumer perceptions, or the likelihood that the consumers will misunderstand labeling and marketing; FDA should not issue a reduced exposure MRTP order

Philip Morris has applied for permission from FDA to make reduced exposure claims for its new IQOS 3 heated tobacco product. My colleagues and I at the UCSF TCORS have submitted a public comment opposing this request. The main thrust of the comment is a discussion of 57 papers published since 2018 that consider IQOS’sContinue reading “Philip Morris’ modified risk tobacco product application for IQOS 3 does not adequately consider new research on IQOS’s appeal to adolescents or young adults, consumer perceptions, or the likelihood that the consumers will misunderstand labeling and marketing; FDA should not issue a reduced exposure MRTP order”

Youth smoking and vaping growing in e-cig friendly New Zealand

New Zealand, like England, the US FDA, and a few other countries, has embraced e-cigarettes. Like other e-cig enthusiasts, the Health Ministry minimizes risks to kids. In particular, its “Position statement on vaping” says: There is no international evidence that vaping products are undermining the long-term decline in cigarette smoking among adults and youth, andContinue reading “Youth smoking and vaping growing in e-cig friendly New Zealand”

Health groups back in court pressing FDA to act on menthol and e-cig PMTA applications

Menthol Over the last year health groups have started suing the FDA in efforts to force action, particularly in the areas of menthol and evaluating e-cigarettes and other new tobacco products. As part of a political compromise, the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act banned characterizing flavors (but not the flavors themselves) exceptContinue reading “Health groups back in court pressing FDA to act on menthol and e-cig PMTA applications”

Ecig use associated with about double the odds of erectile dysfunction

Cigarette smoking causes erectile dysfunction, a point highlighted in the California Tobacco Control Program’s 1998 ad, “Gala Event” (below). There are multiple pathways between smoking and erectile dysfunction, including adverse effects of nicotine, depression in testosterone, increased risk of cardiovascular and other disease and adverse effects on the ability of arteries to dilate (get larger).Continue reading “Ecig use associated with about double the odds of erectile dysfunction”

Philip Morris ordered to suspend IQOS sales in the US

After losing a patent dispute with British American Tobacco over its IQOS heated tobacco product, Philip Morris has been forced to suspend sales of the device in the US. Specifically, BAT says that the heating element in IQOS violates a BAT patent. Philip Morris had met with the FDA and urged it to intervene withContinue reading “Philip Morris ordered to suspend IQOS sales in the US”

Vaping disrupts mitochondria and promotes inflammation independent of the effects of past smoking

The fact that many e-cigarette users are former or current cigarette smokers (dual users) complicates understanding the health effects of e-cigarette use.  Stella Tommasi, Ahmad Besaratinia and their colleagues at USC have used sophisticated genomic analysis of white blood cells (leukocytes) collected from people to pry these effects apart. In their paper, “A novel roleContinue reading “Vaping disrupts mitochondria and promotes inflammation independent of the effects of past smoking”

FDA bent over backwards to authorize sale of RJR’s Vuse Solo e-cig

On October 12, 2021, FDA authorized the sale of RJ Reynolds’ Vuse Solo e-cigarette. When I read the FDA’s Technical Project Lead summary of its scientific justification for authorizing the sale of RJ Reynolds’ Vuse Solo e-cigarette, I was struck by the fact that it ignored the broad scientific literature on e-cigarettes and seemed toContinue reading “FDA bent over backwards to authorize sale of RJR’s Vuse Solo e-cig”

Vaping exploding among New Zealand youth

Like their British cousins, most public health authorities in New Zealand have embraced e-cigarettes for harm reduction. In contrast to heavily regulated cigarettes (no advertising, plain packaging, graphic warning labels, no power walls, strong smokefree laws), e-cigs were introduced to New Zealand in around 2017 without any regulations on marketing and advertising no controls onContinue reading “Vaping exploding among New Zealand youth”

As tobacco industry interests ramp up pressure on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Conference of the Parties to embrace e-cigarettes and the industry’s harm reduction marketing frame, it is important to keep in mind that many countries have rejected e-cigarettes and other ENDS completely. Here is a list that Clear the Air HongContinue reading “47 countries have banned e-cigarettes”
