Lots of smoking in this year’s Oscar movies

2020 was a difficult year for everyone, including the movies, because of COVID-19. The Academy Awards have been delayed and many of the nominated films were released on video on demand rather than into theaters. As a result, some do not appear in the SFM “Top 10 box office” database.  We did review all the films that received nominations in the 11 major categories to identify tobacco imagery, and as usual, there is a lot of tobacco in the nominated films.

Use these materials to organize your events to keep the pressure on the media companies, beginning with the 2021 International Week of Action, April 18-25, leading up to the Academy Awards ceremony on April 25.

You can find the Action Kit with downloadable files on the new UCSF Smokefree Media website here.

Special thanks to Reality Check New York for reviewing the films and taking screenshots of tobacco imagery.
